The Christian Cooperation Foundation has submitted a letter to the Ministry of Justice seeking the nullification of the Prevention of Terrorism Act.
Several civil activists campaigning for information on disappeared persons were also present at the occasion.
The group who staged a protest march to the Ministry of Justice, engaged in a demonstration opposite the Ministry, demanding the nullification of the Prevention of Terrorism Act, owing to its “inhumane nature.”
Convenor of the Christian Co-operation Foundation, Rev. Fr. Sathyavel made following comments on this issue.
“There is no humane face to this Act. When a person is arrested, lawyers are not permitted to meet with them. Parents are not permitted to meet with them. At the same time, when that person has fallen psychologically, no one can meet them to provide relief. There needs to be a humane face to this.”
He added: “We know that a mother and her thirteen year old daughter were arrested. Charges have been levelled even at this thirteen-year-old girl under the Prevention of Terrorism Act.”
