Civil society representatives convened a media briefing on Tuesday  to condemn the arrests of human rights defenders Father Praveen Mahesan and Ruki Fernando, on the night of March 16.

Convenor of Free Media Movement, Sunil Jayasekera expressed following views at the event:

“In truth we consider this as the height of the suppressive procedure this government has continuously followed against human rights activists in our country. The government has gone to the extent of misusing the law and conceptualising and fabricating false pictures to arrest these people and harass them. “

“This is very dangerous. We know that thugs disguised in the various uniforms of religions are carrying out acts of terror in various areas in order to spread religious hatred in the country. The government has taken no steps whatsoever with regard to any of these incidents,” he noted.

Director of Centre for Policy Alternatives, Dr. Paikiasothy Saravanamuttu also expressed his views on the arrest of the activists:

” Who is in charge here? Is the government aware or is it not aware that there is a resolution on Sri Lanka calling for an international investigation, into human rights violations – past, present and ongoing; that arrests of this nature and in this manner, only serve to prove the case?”
