The Highlevel Road that was closed due to a protest in the Thun-naana area in Padukka has been re-opened.

The protest was held against a factory in the area.

Police Media Spokesperson SSP Ajith Rohana said that tear gas and water canons were used this morning to disperse the protesters.

Thereafter a tense situation arose in the area resulting in the OIC of the Borella Police station being admitted to the Avissawella Hospital.

A spokesperson of the Avissawella Hospital said that the police OIC is currently undergoing a surgery, but is not in a critical condition.

Speaking from the location of the tense situation, Newsfirst correspondent Manjula Prabath said that there has been a problem with the water in the area for the past one month and there had been protests with regard to this.

He added that the road was obstructed by felled trees, burnt tires and rocks, which resulted in the road being closed for several hours.
