Battle of the Blues: Thomians score 134 runs on first day

The 135th Battle of the Blues, the Big Match encounter between S. Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia and Royal College , Colombo commenced at the SSC Grounds in Colombo on Thursday.

The gold coin, that is used as the toss for the Battle of the Blues was brought to the SSC ground by a parachuter.Winning the toss, Skipper of S. Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia invited the Royalists to bat first.

The Royalists’ opening stand was restricted to two runs as Shaminda Dias was sent back for just one run. Shiran Panditharatne contributed with 25 runs.

The Thomians managed to bag eight Royal scalps within 59 runs.  However, Thiran Dhanapala and Harith Samarasinghe put on a 96 run stand for the 9th wicket.

Thilan Dhanapala scored 46 runs while Harith Samarasinghe contributed with 50 runs. Royal College Colombo posted a 158 runs all out, in 50.2 overs for their first innings.

Sahan Wijesinghe bagged four wickets for 46 runs for S. Thomas’s College, while Abdul Cader bagged three for 37.

Coming into bat, S. Thomas’ College posted 76 runs for the first wicket. Rashmika Opatha scored 21 runs while Yohan Mendis chipped in with 29.

At stumps on Thursday, St. Thomas’s College were on 134 runs for the lost of three wickets with Sanesh De Mel on 40 not-out.
