The Minister of Public Relations and Public Affairs Mervyn Silva toured the Nawa Nugepara area in Peliyagoda to look into allegations where construction work is being carried out on a canal.

The Minister who arrived at the container yard that belongs to the Sri Lanka Ports Authority inspected the building constructed on the canal.

“The port is very important for Sri Lanka. But I do not think anyone realises that. I doubt even the Ports Authority realises it. They have constructed this building on a canal. You have to demolish this. I will see to it. We can both go to jail thereafter.”

The Mayor of Peliyagoda, Amila Kumarasiri stated that although work had commenced to clean the canal, construction work of the building hindered the cleaning process.

“This is an illegal construction. I think this building is about 15 -20 years old. In ,we had begun to clean the canal but when construction started, it hindered our process. Therefore, we informed Honourable Mervyn Silva – the organiser of the Kelaniya Electorate – to look into this matter. In future, we will demolish any illegal constructions on the canal as we continue our work to clean this waterway.”
