National Drug Policy: Final draft presented to President

The final draft of the National Drug Policy was presented to President Mahinda Rajapaksa on Monday by Minister of Health Maithripala Sirisena.

The policy was presented to the President at Temple Trees.

According to the Presidential Media Unit,  the drugs policy that was created initially by Professor Senaka Bibile is to be adopted as the national drug policy. Speaking at the occasion,  Minister Maithripala Sirisena has stated that he plans to present the policy framework to the cabinet and subsequently implement it expeditiously.

A new independent institution known as the National Drugs Regulatory Authority will be set up once the National Drug Policy is officially adopted into law .

Their aim of the new policy is to standardise the registration of new drug companies as well as to ensure high quality products enter the market. The Minister of Health opines that the implementation of the national drug policy will ensure the reduction of regularities and fraud in the drug sector.
