Armed robbers who broke into a shop in Asgiriwalpola, Gampaha have shot and killed a 19-year-old boy.

The Police Media Unit said the shooting occurred at about 8:40 p.m. Saturday night.

The shop owner, who was away at the time, said that the robbers had assaulted his wife with a firearm.

He adds that his son  had heard his mother cries, had come to the shop and was shot by the robbers.

Speaking of the incident, the father of the deceased said:

“When she shouted, my wife was hit with a pistol. Her head was wounded and when she screamed, they had attempted to flee. My son was eating his dinner at the time. He heard the noise and ran to see what had happened. He saw the blood on his mother, she grabbed him and told him not to chase after them. But he had given chase. As soon as he ran from the shop, they had shot him, maybe because he kept coming after them.”

The police say that the wife of the shop owner was admitted to the Gampaha Hospital and that 19-year-old Nipun Anuranga was pronounced dead on arrival at the Gampaha Hospital.

An Advanced Level student at the Gnanodaya National School in Divulapitiya, Nipun Anuranga was a music student and an accomplished tabla player.
