A group of women staged a protest in Bibile on Friday morning demanding that toddy taverns in the area be shut down. The protest was organised parallel to International Women’s Day which falls on Saturday.
Women from about 35 Grama Niladhari Divisions including Bibile, Medagama and Aivela, participated in the demonstration held on Friday morning.
The protesters marched from the Aivela junction to the Medapitiya Viharaya where they met with the Chief Incumbent of the Viharaya and requested that he intervene to shut down toddy taverns in the area.
Subsequently a discussion was held between the Chief incumbent of the Viharaya, the women and the police. Police officers had promised to take an effort to ensure that the women receive justice for their demands.
