The Democratic Party charges that they were denied the use of a location that had been reserved previously for a public rally in Tangalle.
The party notes that this is the seventh such disruption that they had to face. The party had opted to use the residence of the Party’s Hambantota District Group Leader, as an alternative location for their meeting.
Leader of Democratic Party, Sarath Fonseka expressed these views:
“Although we did not get permission to hold the meeting, we were told that the location was reserved but that the police had said no because the Three-wheeler Drivers Association was to meet at the three-wheeler park and that there may be a clash between the two groups.
“When I was coming here I saw three wheelers parked in the town. Everyone in those three-wheelers waved at us, while some wished us victory. We say that the people must have the right.”
Politicians do not have the right to treat the people they govern like slaves. If politicians hope to do this then those politicians are fools. They are not politicians. We will never allow for the deprivation of the people’s rights because of their threats.”
The Democratic Party alleges that they faced similar disruptions in Balapitiya, Pugoda, Getamanna, Hoongama, Katuwana and Weeraketiya.
Election monitor CaFFE or the Campaign for Free and Fair Elections says that such incidents violate the basic expectations of holding an election.
Executive Director of CaFFE, Keerthi Tennakoon said;
“If a political party cannot conduct its activities freely and if they cannot take their view to the people, then they cannot rally people around the political ideology of their group. If a political party is denied the ability to take their ideas to the people and rally the people then the basic foundation of an election which is political freedom, is being blocked. Through this the basic expectations of representative democracy and elections is violated.”
