The chairman and former chairman of the Wilgamuwa Pradeshiya Sabha have been arrested and remanded on charges of transporting Marijuana in the Chairman’s official vehicle.
The suspects were produced before the Acting Magistrate of Na-Ula on Sunday.
The police say that the two men were arrested in possession of 275 grammes of Marijuana near the Nippon Bridge in Wilgamuwa.
Chairman Jayantha Weerasekera and Former Chairman Ranjith Kumarasinghe were arrested on Saturday evening.
Police Media Spokesperson SSP Ajith Rohana stated:
“They were arrested when their cab was inspected. During inspection, Marijuana or Cannabis was found in the vehicle.”
The raid was carried out at about 8:30 last night based on a tip-off.
A resident who witnessed the incident spoke to Newsfirst:
“The police seized Marijuana from the chairman’s cab. Then they arrested him and brought him straight to the police. They did not take the vehicle into the police station. They left it across the road to the Cultural Centre near the veterinary office. They were speaking for about 20 minutes. When I went closer, they saw me coming. After they saw me, they all got into the vehicle and went into the police station. Afterwards they took the substance to a nearby shop to weigh it. There were four parcels. The police say that there were 275 grammes, but what happened to the other three parcels?”
SSP Ajith Rohana further stated:
“We will not be lenient with those who are involved in crimes involving drugs or alcohol. We take the necessary legal action against them. This was a state vehicle and he was a chairman of a Pradeshiya Sabha, but we took him into custody as per the law and he has been remanded.”
The police say the two men have been remanded until Monday.
