Special Report: Shedding light on the New Laxapana and Canyon Power Stations

Renovation work on the New Laxapana and Canyon Power Stations is currently underway.

The Ceylon Electricity Board says it will take several months to recommence operations at these two power stations.

On the 100th birthday of Wimalasurendra, September 14, 1974, the New Laxapana Power Station generated its first unit of electricity for the national grid.

Water from the Canyon Reservoir which flows through the Laxapana tunnel arrives at the New Laxapana Power Station via this pipe.

(Please watch video). Electricity generation at the New Laxapana Power Station was halted owing to maintenance work here.

Engineers at the power station noted that this is the first time renovation has been undertaken here since 1974.

The Chief Engineer of the Laxapana Complex noted that while renovation was being undertaken at a cost of Rs.6 billion; All the machinery at the plant is being replenished.
