Police Media Spokesperson SSP Ajith Rohana says that there have been thefts reported from various locations over the past two weeks where robbers have made off with a total of close to Rs.30 million.

The most recent incident was reported on Monday morning from Kohuwala. A sum of Rs. 1.5 million  had been stolen from the branch of a private bank in Kohuwala.

The robbery had taken place at about 10:20 on Monday morning at a private bank in Kohuwala located at the junction at the turnoff to Balapokuna Road.

It is learnt that the alleged robbers had threatened bank employees with firearms. The theft had been carried out by two masked men who had made off with the money at the transaction counter.

The thieves had also stolen a gold chain from a bank employee and Rs.55,000 in cash from a customer.

Several such incidents of theft where the thieves had travelled in motorcycles had been reported in the recent past.

On the night of February 13,  thieves who entered a shop in the Dehiwala town, had threatened employees  and had made off with Rs.300,000.
