Police Media Spokesperson SSP Ajith Rohana says that there have been thefts reported from various locations over the past two weeks where robbers have made off with a total of close to Rs.30 million.
The most recent incident was reported on Monday morning from Kohuwala. A sum of Rs. 1.5 million had been stolen from the branch of a private bank in Kohuwala.
The robbery had taken place at about 10:20 on Monday morning at a private bank in Kohuwala located at the junction at the turnoff to Balapokuna Road.
It is learnt that the alleged robbers had threatened bank employees with firearms. The theft had been carried out by two masked men who had made off with the money at the transaction counter.
The thieves had also stolen a gold chain from a bank employee and Rs.55,000 in cash from a customer.
Several such incidents of theft where the thieves had travelled in motorcycles had been reported in the recent past.
On the night of February 13, thieves who entered a shop in the Dehiwala town, had threatened employees and had made off with Rs.300,000.
On February 14, two thieves had broken into a pawning centre in Padukka and had stolen cash and jewellery worth approximately Rs.20 million.
On February 17, thieves broke into a jewellery store in Negombo and made off with about Rs.15 million rupees in cash.
The very next day a wholesale and retail store in Madampe was also robbed.
On February 20, thieves entered a private bank in Matugama in the afternoon and made off with Rs.900,000 in cash.
It is notable that in all these instances the thieves were wearing full face masks and were travelling on motorcycles.
