The police say that suspects including UNP Western Provincial Council Candidate, Royce Fernando, who were arrested in connection to a robbery in Negombo, are being interrogated under detention orders.

At a media briefing convened on Sunday Police Media Spokesperson SSP Ajith Rohana revealed, that Fernando has been allegedly involved in several crimes in the past.

Royce Fernando was arrested on Saturday in connection with an alleged theft of Rs.15 million from a business establishment in Negombo. The Police who gave chase to the masked thieves had also fired at a motorcycle.

SSP Ajith Rohana further revealed more details,

“We discovered the place where they bought the helmet from. On the day of the incident, at about 11:35 a.m., an individual on a motorcycle had arrived at the shop selling the helmets. He was not wearing a helmet. He had made a phone call and asked the person on the other end whether they wanted full face helmets. Afterwards, he purchased two helmets. While making his purchase he had looked around and had then taken the helmets and left. The footage of the helmets at the shop, enabled us to arrest the suspect.”

The media spokesperson further stated:

He was wearing a certain T-shirt. The name of a garment factory located in Katunayake was on the T-shirt. The workers at this factory informed us that they once made about thirty of these t-shirts for an event. It is one of the 30 people that received a T-shirt that was in the footage. As such we were able to arrest him. When we interrogated him, a lot of information came to light. He and the driver of the Chief Architect of this theft Royce Fernando, were school friends. The two motorcycles had been ridden by Royce Fernando’s driver and the individual who purchased the helmets. Royce Fernando was arrested based on information that came to light during the investigation.”

The Police Media Spokesperson added that complaints lodged against Royce Fernando at several other police stations have also been investigated in the past.

“There is much information pertaining to crimes in the past where he has been arrested and produced in court. There are cases from Kandana and Peliyagoda. And in Negombo. Thereby, this arrest was not an arrest that was made for the want of the police or any other person.”
