The Inland Revenue Department states that registration of betting centres has been halted.
Commissioner of the Department of Inland Revenue, Mallika Samarasekara said that that the time period permitted for registration has now lapsed.
The commissioner further stated:
“We will not be registering any betting centres which are now existing businesses from the 1st of July. This is because the main objective of this act is to not increase such businesses. Because by creating a betting and gaming levy act I believe it is not something that we administer, our responsibility is to create a system in relation to taxing such businesse. But through this what happened was to register betting centres that were already in existence so that it wont increase the number of such businesses. The department will not register casino or betting centres in the future.”
