The Inland Revenue Department has decided to commence a new intelligence unit.
Commissioner General of the department Mallika Samarasekara noted that the aim of this programme is to bring in individuals who evade taxes, and identify individuals who have evaded from being registered as individuals liable for income tax.
Commissioner General of the Department Mallika Samarasekera speaking on this issue said:
“We have been trying to implement this for a long time, but this year we have decided to establish this unit. This is the first time that an intelligence unit will be established in this sector.”
“Many allegations are being levelled at us stating that we do not carry out our job properly. We receive many information from the public. This should be the task of the intelligence unit.”
She added; “We might even have to change some of the legislations that are in place. We continued to face difficulties because we had not identified these issues properly.”
