The Hambantota District Operations Office of the United People’s Freedom Alliance was declared open by President Mahinda Rajapaksa on Sunday morning.

A large crowd including UPFA Hambantota District Candidates for the upcoming Southern Provincial council poll, attended the event.

Speaking at the event, President Mahinda Rajapaksa stated:

“I see an international conspiracy against our people. I see this as a conspiracy against our country intended to destroy our country. We are not afraid of anyone. Is there no one in Sri Lanka to conduct an inquiry? Are they saying that there are no learned and intelligent people in Sri Lanka? There are intelligent people in this country and there are learned people in this country.”

The President also commented on the opposition:

“We asked for elections to be called and we campaigned at Lipton Circus. When we were in the opposition we never said ‘no’ to elections. Now, those who are in the opposition are asking why there are elections and are saying ‘no’ to elections. They say there must be international inquiries. The UNPers themselves are now saying that it is pointless for them to go and vote. Ranil Wickremesinghe had apparently asked that this not be said because even if it said people will not come.”

The President further stated,

“If I open the door the entire United National Party will be on my side. But I said that this could not be done. There needs to be a good opposition and therefore they should stay on that side. Please, in the name of the gods, stay on that side. It is enough if we have the people on our side.”
