At an event held in Colombo earlier on Saturday Minister Wimal Weerawansa said that the death penalty should be enforced against that death row convicts who have received their sentences due to crimes related to drugs.

The event was held to vest the Colombo – Slave Island Vithana Mawatha Housing Scheme to the public.

 Minister of Construction, Engineering Services, Housing and Common Amenities, Wimal Weerawansa shared these views;

They say that the amount of drugs in the country has risen. So we propose to the President, implemented the death sentence against convicts on death row who have committed crimes relating to drugs. These things happen because the penalties mentioned in law books are not being enforced. If the death penalty is not effective, then erase it from the books of law as well. Even if the sentences for other crimes are not implemented it is absolutely essential that the death penalty should be implemented for drug smugglers.”
