Former Western Provincial Councillor, Attorney-at-Law Shiral Lakthilaka says the UNP Leadership Council is incapable of uniting the party. He says that the fact that he and former Southern Provincial Councillor Maithri Gunaratne were not granted nominations for the upcoming provincial council polls, proves this incapability.
He expressed these views at a media briefing held in Colombo on Wednesday.
Attorney-at-Law Shiral Lakthilaka said: “Ranil Wickremesinghe, Tissa Attanayake, Ravi Karunanayake and Mangala Samaraweera, got together and decided to cut off our tails. We wish to say to Ranil Wickremesinghe and the other three that it is not our tails, but the tail of the party that is being cut off.”
“While, we who worked for Karu jayasuriya are on the outside: he is the Chairman of the Leadership Council. When statements are being issued to drive a wedge between us and the public, Karu Jayasuriya should be ashamed. He must expeditiously issue a statement that this is not the stance of the Leadership Council..”
Fomer Councillor of Southern PC, Attorney-at-Law Maithri Gunaratne also commented on this: “Ranil Wickremesinghe is now running the Leadership Council too with a government contract. When you consider Karu Jayasuriya’s role today, it is pitiful. From beginning to end, his history is full of betrayal. He crossed over to the government with 17 others from the UNP and then returned alone.”
“Karu Jayasuriya was told that he would be given the deputy leadership and he was asked to return. What did he do after he returned? He betrayed Ranil Wickremesinghe again.”
