An event was held on Tuesday morning to offer floral tributes to the statue of late Mahamanya D.S. Senanayake in lieu of the 66th Independence Day celebrations. This event took place in the vicinity of the Senanayake Statue located at Independence square in Colombo.
Several politicians were present at the event.
Speaking at the event, Leader of United Leadership Council Karu Jayasuriya said: “He was a leader, who back then brought together the Sinhalese, Tamils, Muslims, Malays and the other communities as one…. – and later to make a request for independence with that united strength. At a time when other countries shed blood to achieve independence: he achieved independence in a peaceful manner.”
