Mel Gunasekara Murder: suspect being questioned under detention orders

The police notes that the suspect arrested in connection to the murder of freelance journalist Mel Gunasekara is being questioned under 48 hour detention orders. The final rites of the late journalist are scheduled to be held at the Borella Cemetery tomorrow.

Freelance journalist Mel Gunasekara is believed to have been murdered in her residence located in Battaramulla by an individual who was employed as a painter in her house.

According to the police, the alleged killer is a thirty-nine-year-old father of three and a resident of Dompe. The alleged killer making his way to the residence of Mel Gunasekara, had been recorded by CCTV cameras in an adjacent house.

The police who were able to obtain the alleged killer’s telephone number from the a relative of the late journalist, were able to pinpoint his location using mobile signal towers.

The suspect has confessed to the police that he had broken into the house of the late journalist to rob the house as he had observed that the victim regularly leaves the house on Sundays for religious observances. His confession further stated that he had entered the house through the back door and had murdered Mel Gunasekara as he was frightened that she had identified him.

According to the police, Mel Gunasekara was killed as a result of six stab wounds in the throat area caused by two sharp weapons. The suspect had then proceeded to don garments belonging to the victims younger brother as his own clothes were drenched in blood.

He had also stolen Rs. 1200 and Mel Gunasekara’s mobile phone. The suspect who was apprehended at around 8.30 p.m. on Sunday was brought to the Nugegoda SSP’s office on Monday.
