United National Party Parliamentarian Sujeewa Senasinghe commented on the country’s economy.

He shared these while speaking at the UNP Bala Mandala Meeting in Kandana on Friday.

” The economy has collapsed. The same situation has befallen the hospitals and education. Tea production in the country has dropped by 4 percent; rubber production has dropped by 7 percent; small crops production has dropped by 10 percent and exports have dropped by 15 percent,” he said.

“Not a single ship has docked at the Hambantota Harbour. Vehicles that need to reach Colombo are diverted to Hambantota. At the Hambantota Airport, pilots ground their flights until the birds fly off. A stadium was constructed in Hambantota, but only two matches were played there. The same goes with the Sampur Power Plant and the Trincomalee Jetty. Calculate it — 3500 billion rupees.”

He further added; “There are no tenders. Why? if they call for tenders the commission will be only 10 or 15 percent. The business is being carried out by the ****** family. I received information about this and I mentioned it in Parliament. What happened? Two months ago, bills were presented in Parliament for the company called Gateway and they were given a tax concession of 25 years. The 14 billion dollars for the jetty in Trincomalee comes through this company. They are trying to convert the black money that they stole in to a clean slate. But the people of this country will receive nothing,” Senasinghe said.
