The Ministry of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources states that all Sri Lankan fishermen under Indian custody have been released by now.
The Ministry said that 51 such Sri Lankan fishermen are currently housed at the Mahabodhi Society and are due to return to the country within the next week. The government has sent Rs.550,000 to provide them with basic facilities.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Fisheries said that only fifteen Indian fishermen under Sri Lankan custody are to be released and noted that legal action has been taken to release 41 fishing vessels.
The Ministry further said that legal action has been taken against the 38 fishermen who arrived in six fishing vessels, in Kankesanthurai and that they will not be released until the case is completed.
