Mayor of Kotte, Janaka Ranawaka says that shops which sell cigarettes in the Kotte Municipality will be removed during the course of this year.
He made this statement at an event held in Kotte on Thursday.
The event was held to felicitate the staff of the Kotte Municipal Council.
He said; “We will strive to rid the Kotte Municipality of places where cigarettes are sold and smoked by the 31st of December. We aim to do this by raising awareness. This is a vision of the Health Minister. We should do this for the sake of the future of our children.”
Minister of Health Maithripala Sirisena expressed his views on representatives of Local Government Institutions.
“What we know today is that the structure of the country’s local government institutions have come under lot of scrutiny amongst the public. Members of local government institutions have been jailed on charges pertaining to bribery, corruption, fraud, murder, theft and the sale of narcotics.”
