A twelve-year-old boy has been arrested in the Watagoda area in Talawakelle for allegedly possessing counterfeit notes.

Police stated that the arrest was made based on a tip-off received saying that a shop owner had been retaining the child. The police had discovered ten counterfeit notes of 1000 rupees and four counterfeit notes of 500 rupees  allegedly in the possession of the child.

After police investigations, the boy had confessed that he had taken the notes from a cache, which he had seen his uncle hiding in a nearby tea estate.  The child had later used the counterfeit notes to purchase items from a shop in the Watagoda area, which had subsequently led to his arrest.

The uncle of the boy who had allegedly hidden the notes is reported to have fled the area.

The police said that they have already commenced investigations to capture him.
