The Ministry of Rehabilitation and Prisons Reforms says that a report has been submitted to President Mahinda Rajapaksa on the state of all inmates in prisons located across the country.
Secretary to the Ministry, G.S. Vithanage said that according to the report, there are currently 424 individuals handed death sentences.
Meanwhile, 223 inmates are currently serving life sentences.
Recently a group of inmates sentenced to death, climbed on to the roof of the Bogambara Prison and engaged in a protest to lessen their sentence. The report was prepared subsequent to this happening, and the Secretary to the Ministry noted that the President would arrive at a decision regarding these individuals.
