Newsfirst visits javelin accident victim Gayan Madhushanka

The condition of Gayan Madhushanka, the student of Panamura Maha Vidyalaya in Embilipitiya, who was speared in the face by a javelin, is steadily improving.

Newsfirst visited the Accident Ward of the National Hospital in Colombo on Friday to inquire into the well-being of Gayan Madushanka, a student athlete who has showcased his sporting talent in the national arena.

Gayan Madushanka is an Advanced Level Arts Student from Panamura Maha Vidyalaya in Embilipitiya.He participated in the All Island Sports Festival last year. Gayan was struck by a javelin in the left cheek just under his eye, yesterday during training at Panamura Maha Vidyalaya

He was admitted to the Embilipitiya Base Hospital where a protruding section of the javelin was removed. He was then transferred to the National Hospital in Colombo for further treatment. Gayan who was admitted to the National Hospital Thursday evening, underwent a marathon surgical operation that lasted five hours.

A thirty-member team including Specialist Surgeon Dr. Wasantha Wijeynayake, Face and Mouth Specialist Dr. Ananda Ratnayake, ENT specialist Dr. Chinthaka Gunaratne and two anaesthesiologists performed the surgery.
