Chief Opposition Whip MP John Amaratunge, accompanying President Mahinda Rajapaksa on an official visit to the Middle East, has caused a stir within the party and among party supporters.

On a prior occasion, a question was posed to the UNP Working Committee, on whether Chief Government Whip John Amaratunge was preparing to accompany President Mahinda Rajapaksa on an official visit to the United States in 2010.

This question was posed then by the current UNP Leadership Council member, MP Ravi Karunanayake.

Chief Government Whip, MP John Amaratunge, who has functioned as the Acting Opposition Leader on many occasions was part of the delegation that departed Sri Lanka accompanying President Mahinda Rajapaksa on state visits to Jordan, Palestine and Israel on  January 5

MP John Amaratunge who is one of the most senior parliamentarians from the United National Party, is not a part of the Party’s Leadership Council.

Party supporters question whether MP John Amaratunge is accompanying the President on state visits and building close political relations with prominent persons in the government, because he is disillusioned with the UNP. As such, will Chief Government Whip John Amaratunge too abandon the UNP owing to disillusionment with the prevailing leadership?
