A group of death row prisoners at the Bogambara Prison Complex are currently engaging in a protest by climbing the roof of the prison.  According to prison’s commissioner Chandraratna Pallegama, the protesters are calling on officials to commute their death sentence.

He adds that the Bogambara Prison houses 450 inmates and that the prison complex earlier housed nearly 1500 inmates. Around 250 inmates were transferred to the Welikada Prison complex while a number of prisoners were also transferred to other prison complexes around the country.

Chandraratna Pallegama notes that this protest may have also resulted owing to the transfer in question.
