The Sri Lanka Police Department has become a source of news in the new year with the arrest of the Wellampitiya OIC’s for alleged possession of Heroin; and the human rights charges against the Department taking the centre stage.
According to the Sri Lanka Human Rights Commission, the highest number of complaints were reported against the Police Department.
Speaking to Primetime Sunrise earlier on Wednesday morning, Police Media spokesperson, SSP Ajith Rohana stated that as the enforcer of law and order in the country it is not unusual for the police department to be charged with highest number of allegations of the violation of human rights.
The police spokesperson added that they will however look into mitigating this number in the future.
He however pointed out that one must not forget that there was a considerable number of false complaints against the department as well. Elaborating further, SSP Ajith Rohana said that measures are being taken by the police to make the department more accessible to the public.
