The Department of Railways says that a three-member committee has commenced a probe into the fire that broke out in the engine of a train in close proximity to the Wadurawa Railway Station.

Superintendent of Railways L.A.R. Ratnayake said that the committee will produce its findings within a week.

Deputy Chief Engineer for Train Power-sets Keerthi Hewawitharana says that the accident may have occurred as a result of the temperature between the track and wheels increasing, when the brakes were applied.

The ill-fated train engine was towed to the Rambukkana Railway Station for investigations.

Several individuals panicked and jumped off the train when the fire broke out. Three such persons died when they were run over by another train.

A couple from Ganithapura in Polonnaruwa were killed in the tragedy while twenty-eight-year-old B.N. Ekanayake from Godahena, Kandy, who served in the Sri Lanka Air Force was also killed in the accident.
