Four more human skulls have been unearthed during the excavations that are being carried out in close proximity to a kovil in Mannar on the A 32 road.
Police Media Spokesperson , SSP Ajith Rohana said that with the latest discovery, ten human skulls have been discovered. He added that the Judicial Medical Officer had confirmed that these skulls and the skeletal remains date back 15 years.
Investigations are also underway to determine the cause of death of these individuals. SSP Ajith Rohana further said that the excavations have been suspended temporarily on court orders. Meanwhile, in the latest turn of events in the year long saga of the mass grave discovered at the Matale General Hospital ; authorities have commenced dental examinations of the teeth found there.
JMO or Judicial Medical Officer the Kurunegala Hospital, Dr. Ajith Jayasekara says that the dental examinations will help ascertain the identities of the remains found in the mass grave and also the causes of death.
He added that DNA testing would commence following dental examinations.
The JMO added that once the reports on the samples sent to Chinese laboratories and the reports of additional inquiries are received, a final report will be submitted to court. Dr. Jayasekara says that the skeletal remains are believed to be those of people who died in an incident which may have occurred between 1986 and 1990.
One hundred and Fifty Five (155) skeletal remains were discovered at this mass grave which was unearthed on the December 26 last year, during construction work on the bio gas unit of the Matale General Hospital.
Sixty eight (68) persons have submitted affidavits to court thus far, claiming the remains of their relatives are among those that were found.
