A group including Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa on Wednesday met with homeowners in Wanathamulla, Borella whose homes are scheduled to be demolished.

A group including MP Duminda Silva, MP Thilanga Sumathipala and officials from the Urban Development Authority accompanied MP Namal Rajapaksa.

A resident said,  “What should be done is that a Sports City should be built along with the Commercial Centre. A small cricket ground, a swimming pool and gym.”

The homeowners in the area presented their problems to MP Namal Rajapaksa.

Following are the comments made by the homeowners of the area,

“The primary problem is this. They are asking for 100,000 rupees. They are asking us to pay a lease of 3900 rupees a month over 20 years. But sir from our position…”

“What we are asking of you is that you make fair arrangements for us so that instead of paying the full lease on the house…”

Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa replied, “I cannot give you a decision. We will go and discuss it. The 3900 rupees is not a lease. “We must provide a solution for his problem.”

“We will construct the homes anyway. Colombo needs these homes. Uncle, even though you do not accept it, your children accept it. If the President wants votes from Colombo easily, then can he not bring people from Hambantota and settle them here? If we do this and register them to vote we can win Colombo.”

Subsequent to the above statement made by Namal Rajapaksa homeowners of the area said: “Why are you saying this? We are fighting for you. We have fought a lot for you. That is why we are saddened. Sir you should study this and give us good homes, then we will leave.”

Then Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa said,  “You must understand something. No matter what anyone says, you will not be forcefully evicted. The other thing is that it is pointless if I give you homes;it is pointless if I do not give you homes. Because my constituency is not here. I have built houses there for my people. But do not prepare to go marketing for various people.”

Following the discussion with the homeowners, the group including MP Namal Rajapaksa inspected the construction site of the housing complex, on a request made by residents.

Another resident of the area said   “No matter what anyone says sir, you have a major connection with us. You hold discussions with us sir, and convene the councils again….. He cannot solve somethings; because the President is above.”

“Take a ministerial position in the cabinet sir, then the problem will be resolved.”

Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa replied,  “If a cabinet ministerial position could be given, I would have asked for it wouldn’t I?”
