Today marks Unduvap Full Moon Poya Day, a significant day in the Buddhist calendar.
The unique event of bringing the Bo-sapling of the sacred Jayasiri Maha Bodhi from India to Anuradhapura, by Sangamitta Maha Theri took place on a day like today.
This event symbolises that Buddhism took deep root throughout the length and breadth of Sri Lanka.A disciplined system of worshiping, rituals connected to this great religion began. The Sripada pilgrimage season also commences with the advent of Unduvap Full Moon Poya Day.
Marking the commencement of the Sripada pilgrimage season, the casket containing sacred relics and the statue of Sumana Saman Dewa reached Sri Pada last night.
