The parents of individuals who were reported to be missing or dead during the time of the war arrived at the Presidential Commission to Investigate into Complaints regarding Missing Persons on Friday.
The parents met with the Commission and presented a memorandum. The Presidential Commission to Investigate into Complaints regarding Missing Persons was established as a result of the recommendations made by the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission.
“My child was only sixteen-years-old. She went to school and never came back. There are so many families from my village who faced this same situation. Some parents do not even know if their children are dead or alive. In my village every woman has either lost a husband or child.”
The Dead and Missing Persons Parents Association arrived at the Commission on Friday and handed over details and documentation of their loved ones whom they have not seen or heard of since they were reported missing.
Convenor of the Association Ananda Jayamanne says that some of the missing persons were forcibly taken away from their families by the LTTE during the time of the war .
Deputy Chairman of the Eastern Provincial Council M.A. Subair and Provincial Councillor Amir Ali also produced documents to the Commission.
Chairman of Presidential Commission to Investigate into Complaints Regarding Missing Persons, Maxwell Parakrama Paranagama said; “We now have all together around 10,000 complaints that have been received. This is a very big task and we need your co-operation to tackle this mass task involved in this.”
The parents then made their submissions before the commission.
The Commission also made a request from the the Dead and Missing Persons Parents Association. Maxwell Parakrama Paranagama added; “ If there is any difficulty and any fear to furnish us with details regarding to the missing persons please inform us. We will do every thing to create a peaceful environment for you to furnish us with details.”
