UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe says that Nelson Mandela’s decision to hand over power to others and leave even when his party had internal difficulties is a shining example.

Nevertheless, others question as to why Ranil Wickremesinghe does not follow this example.

In Parliament, on  April  23, 1992, Ranil Wickremesinghe who was the leader of the house at the time, outlined the steps that should be taken by the Sri Lanka Freedom Party, which was under the leadership of Sirimavo Bandaranaike at the time, in order for them to be victorious.

The United National Party which laid claim to a voter base of over 4.7 million has seen this voter base reduce to 2.3 million under the present leadership.

Fmr. UNP Organiser of Maligawatte, Rohana Priyantha stated,

“I kindly ask that the Leader of the UNP who has lost 27 elections take the example of Nelson Mandela and leave the party. We ask why the Leader of the United National Party Ranil Wickremesinghe who has lost 27 elections and continues to hold on to that chair, does not follow the lead of Nelson Mandela and show our country? We have been completely denied the democracy that we had within the party. There is nothing else to say.

Organiser of Dompe of the Democratic Party, Indika Bandara said,

“Was Karu Jayasuriya who betrayed the party taken back because there was no connection between them? How many nasty things were done withholding the Deputy Leadership until Karu came back? They have sidelined Sajith Premadasa and now Karu Jayasuriya has taken over the contract of destroying the United National Party.”
