The Colombo Municipal Council said registering of domestic animals within the Colombo city limits will be made compulsory from next year.
Urban Commissioner, Chandrani Jayawardena said that the legislation bill has already been formulated. A registration book will also be maintained for this purpose.
She noted that though a registration law for domestic animals has already being enacted the law was not implemented in adequate manner.
Majority of the 15,000 pets which are reared within Colombo are yet to be registered. Meanwhile, she added that foster homes will be established for pets who go missing.
