Met Dept. says a cyclone has developed in the Bay of Bengal

The Department of Meteorology states that the low pressure zone in the Bay of Bengal has developed into a tropical cyclone.

The Met Department states that the cyclone named Maadi is traveling away from the country and is presently 450 kilometres northeast off the coast of Jaffna.

Earth slips triggered by the inclement weather disrupted vehicular movement in the in the Wela-daranda area on the Kandy road. Weladaranda Grama Niladhari Officer, H.G. Ranjabanda said that around 400-500 families use this route on a daily basis and among them are school children.

He added; “this is the only road for the area residents. The road was renovated recently but due to heavy showers last night, earth slips had occurred in certain locations.”

The Divisional Secretary of Madaumbara says that renovation work on the road have been handed over to the Road Development Authority.
