Minister of Telecommunications and Information Technology, Ranjith Siyambalapitiya spoke on the Rs.1200 salary hike granted to all government sector workers.
A special function was held at the Dedigama Primary School on Tuesday under the auspices of minister Ranjith Ssiyambalapitiya.
“If people ask whether the Rs.1200 that was granted by the president as an allowance is sufficient, we cannot provide a direct answer. But we should consider where we get the money to give this Rs 1200. In most developed countries taxes amount to 99% of government revenue. Fortunately, we only obtain 95% of our revenue through taxes. If we look at the numbers involved we will have to charge Rs. 84 from every citizen even small children based on the assumption that the population stands at 20 million, in order to come up with 1200 rupees for all government servants. So as a government we have to take into consideration all sides and ensure that we ease the burden on all sides.”
