Area residents charge that the waste collected by the Badulla Pradeshiya Sabha is being disposed at the Galgodahinna Public Cemetery which falls under the purview of the Udawela Grama Nildhari Division.
As a result the residence have been experiencing a number of health issues.
The Galgodahinna Public Cemetery which is located in the Udawela area, which comes under the purview of the Badulla Pradeshiya Sabha is for the residents in surrounding villages.
The residents point out that residents from Rabukpotha, Udawela, Malangamuwa, Annasiwatte Samagigama, 2nd mile post and 3rd mile post of Galgodahina and Nikawatte have used this cemetery to bury the deceased; however this land has been converted into a garbage dump.
As a result the nearby waterway has also become polluted. They also charge that their health has been affected.
Area residents speaking of the issue said,
“For generations there has been 22 perches. But now we have only two perches of land which is enough to dig a grave. However, about 18 perches are completely covered with garbage.”
