President Mahinda Rajapaksa addressing an event in Colombo on Monday noted that Sri Lanka as a nation has always stood up against foreign invaders.
President Rajapaksa made this statement during a function held at the Colombo Public Library premises. A statue of revolutionary Vietnamese leader and Former President of Vietnam Ho Chi Minh was unveiled at the Colombo Public Library premises today, further strengthening the bilateral relations between Sri Lanka and Vietnam.
The event was held under the auspices of President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
Deputy Prime Minister of Vietnam Pham Binh Minh who arrived in Sri Lanka on a two-day official visit also took part in the event .
President Mahinda Rajapaksa, speaking on the occasion said:
“We were invaded many times. However, our people were not prepared to live in this manner. The people of Sri Lanka and Vietnam rose up against these invaders at every possible instance. We always stood for the oppressed. That is why the hero Ho Chi Minh is very dear to us. He fought for freedom against the powerful. Sri Lanka was on his side through all his battles. Ho Chi Minh even visited Sri Lanka on three occasions. “
