Fishermen issue: Jayalalitha seeks PM’s intervention

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalitha Jayaram sought the intervention of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to secure the immediate release of 80 fishermen arrested by the Sri Lanka Navy.

Indian media reported that the she expressed distress over the recent arrest of twenty fishermen and seizure of five mechanised boats on the 21st of this month, on World Fisheries Day.

Indian media, quoting a letter written by Jayalalitha to Prime Minister Singh, said that the Indian Chief Minister insisted that India use highest diplomatic channels to secure the release of 80 fishermen and 47 fishing boats detained by the Sri Lankan authorities at the earliest.
