 The bus driver arrested in connection with an accident in Thalathuoya which led to deaths of five people has been released on a surety of Rs.500,000.
The surety was determined after considering submissions made by the Thalathuoya Police to the Kandy Magistrate.
The bodies of the five victims who were killed in the accident in Haragama, Thalathuoya on Sunday morning, are currently lying at the Dharma Shalawa of the Gohagoda Viharaya where the public can pay their final respects.
The Chief Prelate of the Asgiri Chapter of the Siam Sect, Most Venerable Udugama Sri Buddharakkitha Thera visited the Viharaya today to pay his final respects to the victims.
The fatal accident occurred when a van travelling from Badulla to Kandy, collided with a bus plying from Kandy to Haragama. The police said that the van driver had lost control of the speeding van near a bend on the road in Haragama and had crashed into the oncoming bus.
There were 29 passengers in the van of whom, three women and two children were killed.
Director of the Kandy Teaching Hospital, Dr. R.M.S.K. Ratnayake said that four persons who were injured in the accident are still being treated at the hospital’s ICU.
