Sri Lanka are currently taking on the visiting Kiwis in the first One Day International of the series, being played at the Mahinda Rajapaksa International Cricket Stadium, in Hambantota.
Sri Lanka were invited to take first lease of the wicket, and a massive 137-run second wicket stand helped the Lankans post 288 runs their 50 overs.
Despite Sri Lanka losing opener Dimuth Karunaratne on the very first delivery of the game, Tillakeratne Dilshan and Kumar Sangakkara steered the home side pass the 100 run mark.
After the fall of the duo, the Lankans lost wickets at regular intervals.
However Skipper Angelo Matthew was resilient at the crease and scored an unbeaten 74, by helping Sri Lanka to 288 for the loss of 9 in their five overs.
Tillakaratne Dilshan top scored with 81 runs.
Chasing 289 to win New Zealand were 17 for one wicket a short while ago.
