COLOMBO (News 1st); The daughter of remanded specialist neurosurgeon Dr. Maheshi Wijerathna has been arrested by authorities for allegedly issuing death threats to officials of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC).
The arrest took place earlier today (7).
The young woman is expected to be produced before court later today.
Her mother, Dr. Maheshi Wijerathna, a neurosurgeon at Sri Jayewardenepura General Hospital, was arrested in June over serious corruption allegations.
Investigators allege that Dr. Wijerathna sold neurosurgical equipment, including External Ventricular Drains (EVDs) and VP Shunts, to patients at grossly inflated prices through a private company she was affiliated with.
Despite the availability of these items at significantly lower costs through official hospital procurement channels, patients were reportedly directed to purchase them privately.
Adding to the controversy, it was also revealed that Dr. Wijerathna had allegedly performed surgeries on patients who had been declared brain-dead for several days.
Dr. Wijerathna remains in remand custody. Her bail hearing is scheduled for July 8.
