COLOMBO (News 1st); Sri Lanka is exploring the possibility of bringing a specialist veterinary team from Thailand to assist in the treatment of Kavantissa, the tusker currently in critical condition after sustaining gunshot injuries.

Minister of Environment Dr. Dhammika Patabendi said plans are being formulated to secure the assistance of foreign experts, adding that discussions regarding the matter are expected to take place in the coming days.

The Minister recently visited Kavantissa to assess the animal's condition and review the treatment currently being administered. During the visit, special attention was focused on the ongoing treatment plan and the additional medical interventions that may be required to improve the tusker's chances of survival.

Dr. Patabendi also instructed officials to seek the support of veterinary specialists attached to zoological institutions if necessary and to strengthen coordination among all agencies involved in the treatment effort.

The Minister emphasized the importance of monitoring the tusker's movements and behaviour during the night. As a result, steps have been initiated to obtain drone cameras equipped with thermal imaging to assist with continuous surveillance and assessment of the animal's condition.

Meanwhile, Deputy Minister of Environment Anton Jayakody said authorities remain fully committed to saving Kavantissa's life and are continuing treatment efforts with urgency.

According to the Deputy Minister, while the gunshot wound has shown signs of improvement following medical treatment, the tusker has once again stopped feeding, leading to concerns that the animal is now suffering from dehydration.

Kavantissa, is one of the largest wild tuskers still roaming Sri Lanka.
