Fowzie returns to Parliament; takes oath as an MP replacing Mujibur

COLOMBO (News 1st); Former Sri Lankan Minister A. H. M. Fowzie re-entered Parliament on Thursday (9).

He took oaths as an MP in the presence of Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena in Parliament.

A gazette notice was published in January, naming Former Sri Lankan Minister A. H. M. Fowzie to the parliamentary seat left vacant following the resignation of Mujibur Rahuman.

Former SJB Parliamentarian Mujibur Rahuman stepped down from Parliament to contest for the Mayor of Colombo at the upcoming Local Government Election.

Former Sri Lankan Minister A. H. M. Fowzie secured 48,701 votes from the SJBs Colombo District list at 2020 Parliamentary Election.

Political Career:

1959 - Entered into Politics and Contested for Maligawatta Ward (C.M.C.);

1962 and 1965; Contested for Colombo Municipal Council Elections;

1968 - Elected Deputy Mayor of Colombo; 

1969 - First Candidate to give Nominations on an Election without being in the Country; 

1973 - Elected as the 16th Mayor of Colombo;

1973-1974 - Won a Vote of No Confidence Motion and crossed over to SLFP with 14 C.M.C. members;

1974 - First SLFP Mayor of Colombo.

1993 - Contested for Western Provincial Council elections and led the PA team and won Colombo District and WPC. 

1994 - Elected to the Parliament.
