COLOMBO (News 1st) - Sri Lanka's Police Chief C. D. Wickremeratne has instructed police officers to only inspect school students for narcotics possession based on verified information.

He had also given instructions to refrain from inspecting school students at random if the information cannot be verified.

Police Spokesperson SSP Nihal Thalduwa told News 1st that police officers were informed not to conduct a search on students, if the information on narcotics possession is not credible, thus causing no inconvenience to students.

He also said that primary school students should never be subject to a search, unless under exigent circumstances.

The Police Spokesperson also said those police officers must ensure that no one video records any search of students, in order to protect the privacy of the school student.
