COLOMBO (News 1st); Fishermen state that the Sea of Sri Lanka is being exploted by Indian fishermen, who use methods such as bottom trawling to capture fish.

Prasanga Fernando, the Secretary to the All Ceylon Fishermen's Professional Association stated that the resources in the Sea of Sri Lanka are being taken away by Indian fishermen, and are using methods such as bottom trawling to engage in fishing, which is illegal in Sri Lanka.

Alleging that India has earned a record revenue from fishing and fish exports in the past years, the fishermen said that in 2021 itself they earned USD 442 billion.

"They earn this money by using the resources in the Sea of Sri Lanka. These dollars should have gone to Sri Lanka, but they are fishing using high-tech engines" he added.
