New strain of dengue identified: Health authorities

COLOMBO (News 1st); Health authorities say that a new strain of dengue has been identified in the country.

Deputy Director General of Health Services, Director of Colombo Ridgeway Hospital, Specialist Dr. G. Wijesuriya advised the public to seek medical advice if fever persists.

He also advised that public should take steps to ensure that their surroundings are clean and void of any mosquito-breeding sites, as well as to reduce the opportunity to be bitten by them.

Dr. Wijesuriya also said that a viral fever that is spreading among adults as well as children these days, and the symptoms of this are sore throat, fever, cough and phlegm.

The symptoms may also persist after the fever recedes, Dr. Wijesuriya said, advising the public to obtain medical instructions as soon as they show symptoms.
