COLOMBO (News 1st); Prof. Buddhi Marambe of the University of Peradeniya warned that the current food crisis would only exacerbate in the near future if the Government did not ensure that the upcoming Maha season is extremely successful.

Speaking during a media briefing, Prof. Marambe said that only 394,000 hectares have been cultivated for Yala season, out of the expected amount of 500,000 hectares, while farmers are already halfway into the season itself.

Prof. Marambe also said that the fuel crisis, in addition to the foreign exchange crisis, has only managed to make the current issue worse, and the future food crisis being preventable is unlikely.

He further stated that the food crisis will not be preventable if the Government heeds the issues of farmers with the same attention it gives to other crisis.
